NEW YORK, September 20 (C-FAM) The term “reproductive health” seeped without fanfare into UN language in 1972 when it was adopted by Jose Barzelatto, the inaugural head of WHO’s program on human reproduction.

A tense international political and legal standoff ended instead with a mother in recovery, a baby girl whose brief life ended by natural causes, and a frustrated collection of activists scrambling to do damage control.

De geboorte van een baby met zeer ernstige afwijkingen leidt voor ouders en het medische behandelteam vaak tot ingrijpende dilemma’s rond doorgaan of stoppen met behandelen. In het standpunt “Medische beslissingen rond het levenseinde bij pasgeborenen met zeer ernstige afwijkingen” geeft de KNMG handvatten aan artsen hoe te handelen als verder behandelen bij een baby medisch zinloos is geworden. Het maakt het besluitvormingsproces van artsen over het levenseinde van zieke pasgeborenen inzichtelijk voor ouders en samenleving. Het geeft aan wanneer het handelen van artsen als passende palliatieve zorg wordt beschouwd en wat zorgvuldig medisch handelen rond het levenseinde inhoudt.
